Robbins Shoots Course Record at Cuthbert Cup

Oct. 6, 2008

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Sophomore Kyle Robbins shot a course record six-under par 66 in the opening round of the 2008 Cuthbert Cup Monday morning to lead the field. He finished the day with a seven-under 137, and maintains a four-stroke lead heading into the final round of competition.

Riding the back of Robbins, the Lumberjacks enter the final day of competition third overall, only seven strokes off the pace, and only one back of Gardner-Webb. USC-Upstate leads the team standings with a four-over 576. After shooting an opening-round 299, the 'Jacks regrouped in the second round shooting an even-par 288. The 'Jacks had three players who shot even par or lower in the second round, and were able to drop a 75.

Classmate Michael Smith finished the day with a four-over par 148. He enters Tuesday's round 15th overall. Senior Chad Spencer shot a first-round 78, but battled back in the second round to card a 72. He is currently 19th overall with a six-over 150. Junior Josh Irving is only two strokes back of Spencer, with an opening day 79-73 - 152. Irving's score is good enough to finish the day 29th overall. Freshman Stetson McMillan is 31st overall after recording a 79-75 - 154.

"Kyle recorded a course record in the opening round," said SFA head coach Trey Schroeder. "He is really hitting the ball well. Unfortunately the first round was good and bad. Kyle played great, but we were forced to accept a 78 and a 79, which hurt our score.

"I was proud of the way our guys fought back in the second round. We really played more consistent as a team, and it showed in our scores. That is what we've been working on the last couple of weeks in practice. With so many young guys, everyday is a learning experience, but they are beginning to play with greater confidence, and play smart golf."

The Lumberjacks close out the Cuthbert Cup with the final round of action at the Links at Stono Ferry Tuesday morning. The Lumberjacks will return to action Monday, Oct. 13, when they travel to Huntsville, Texas, for the SHSU Men's Invitational.
